Package: gnome-disk-utility
Version: 3.38.2-1
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

I started formatting an external HDD using the GNOME Disks utility. I
selected the 'overwrite' option since I was formatting it as an encrypted
LUKS partition with a BTRFS filesystem inside, and I wanted the whole
partition filled with random data to avoid leaking information. The operation
started, a small animated wheel was shown next to the HDD in the list of
disks to show that the operation was ongoing, but no other progress
information or even information about what exactly the operation was doing
was shown. I expected at least some sort of progress bar - it would have
been nice to have since the operation ended up taking more than 22 hours.

I looked around in the D-Bus interface for UDisks2 and found an object
corresponding to the ongoing operation, named /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/jobs/24.
It had an interface named org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Job that had properties
named Progress and ExpectedEndTime, among others, that could be used to
construct a progress meter. GNOME Disks should use those properties to
display progress information to the user.
