Desire to help and personal introduction

Hi,

I contribute to a lot of varied areas within Debian, and I'd like to make the Debian GNOME Team one of those varied areas. I'm not sure whether I'd want to call myself an official team member. I'm neither a DD nor a DM (but the application process to be a DM is in my near future), so I'll need sponsors for uploads.

I love mixing things up: I love high-quality autopkgtests, Clang rebuilds, reproducible builds, ports builds, cross builds, the whole QA shebang. I'm also well versed in C and Meson. I sent a merge request adding an autopkgtest for Zenity that I'd appreciate if someone could take a look at.

Are there any big fish to fry that a new contributor should work on? A personal itch I'd like to scratch is making an experimental upload of Zenity 3.99.0. I really think Zenity is a cool project. Since I don't have the patience to learn the GTK API, I often invoke it from my personal C programs over a pipe or socket to create GUIs.

Plot twist: because I am well-versed in C and Meson, perhaps I could work on writing autopkgtest-style tests and sending them upstream? For example although it requires a slew of external programs, maybe they'd like to have my Xdotool-based autopkgtest. As a matter of fact, I think I'll ask the GNOME folks what they think as soon as I'm done writing this email.

Please let me know your thoughts on these matters. My IRC nick is pert if you'd like to give me a poke. Some of my other roles (many of which newly acquired) are being both the upstream and downstream for Monkeysphere, the project to push the boundaries of OpenPGP, maintaining libre wireless firmware and cross toolchains, and I work on mathematical software.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,
John
