Ok, tried again with 0.88.1 and it fails in the same way.

If it's a bug in sbuild, it would be one that has not been reported before.

I'm Cc:ing josch in case he can look at this and tell us what he thinks.

(the strange thing is that the same version used to build ok in trixie
last time, so something has changed and I don't know what it could be)
