I've eventually found the cause concerning the xterm behavior:
I had

*VT100.reverseWrap:             true

for XTerm, and this, since at least April 2002. It seems to have been
the default in the past (I could see in my mail archives that other
users had it too), and I had never changed this part of my config
since then.

So I suppose that this bug can be closed.

I'll probably remove this setting if I cannot find any information
about why it was set...
