In Debian, the preferred way to do the equivalent of what's in that
guide is to edit /etc/gdm3/greeter.dconf-defaults, which already offers
disable-user-list as a commented-out example.
(Unfortunately not all of the settings in
/etc/gdm3/greeter.dconf-defaults are still functional - I already
reported this as https://bugs.debian.org/1105057 - but I'm fairly sure
disable-user-list does work.)
