It's working fine here (tried on a laptop with GNOME from experimental,
and on GNOME and Cinnamon VMs with GNOME from unstable). In a slow VM
it does take a few seconds for content to appear, with the
arrow-with-spinner cursor, but that doesn't match the symptoms you
reported.

That does sound like a text rendering problem where the text is either
the same colour as the background, or laid out but not rendered for some
other reason.
What desktop environment are you using?
Are you using a non-standard theme (other than Adwaita) or some other
unusual configuration?
