Cloning a bug for evince since you said papers and evince both have this 
issue.

Debian is unlikely to implement new features in either evince or papers, 
that is something that would have to happen upstream. An evince bug 
report already exists (since 2009), I opened an equivalent papers bug 
report for completeness; links above.

Those are alternatives to creating an account locally on the GNOME 
Gitlab (the "create a new account here" link in the left panel) which I 
believe is still possible.
