Gentle ping (@Marco, you seem to have worked on smartcard support in the past).

It seems that simply removing the first two lines of:
/etc/pam.d/gdm-smartcard-sssd-exclusive
/etc/pam.d/gdm-smartcard-sssd-or-password

Is enough to fix this (IOW, it lets GDM3 automagically figure out the username when a smartcard/yubikey with an appropriate cert is inserted)...but I'm not sure if there's a better fix...
