yay, i'm glad that solved the main problem.  Sorry for not noticing this
bug and asking about your pinentry setup earlier.

I'm not sure what we can do about debugging the upgrade process now,
though :(

I'm inclined to close this bug report, unless you want to reassign it to
one of the other packages involved in picking the wrong pinentry.
