Why do you have an older version of automake?  what version do you have
installed?

/usr/bin/automake is controlled by the alternatives system, so just
asking to be sure that a particular version of automake is installed
isn't actually sufficient to ensure that (for example) /usr/bin/automake
doesn't ultimately point back to automake1.11 :/

Can you suggest a patch that would have helped you to avoid the problem?
