Either has the same behaviour. It seems to be related to passphrase
entry, as the problem can be fixed with updatestartuptty, but that
wasn't necessary before.

I don't have any -- I could create some, but I think the main issue is
that something changed with the way the agent is invoked so it doesn't
see my login session anymore.

That session is started with "exec startx" from a tty. Window manager is
ratpoison, no desktop environment is loaded.
