For _debugging_ it might also be useful to put

  log-file tcp://1.2.3.4:PORTNO
  verbose
  debug ipc,reader,cardio

into scdaemon.conf and 

  log-file tcp://1.2.3.4:PORTNO
  verbose
  debug ipc

into gpg-agent.conf.  Then run

watchgnupg --tcp PORTNO

  on 1.2.3.4.  Use only a test PIN etc.
