[Debian GNUstep maintainers] Re: new GNUstep packages -- for
developers only!

I've uploaded new (pre-release) versions of the gnustep-make, -base, and
-gui packages. (No changes to -back, and the only real changes to -base
and -gui were recompiling with the new -make.)
Major changes in -make are:
- gsdh_gnustep does the right thing for frameworks now
- no longer modify /etc/ld.so.conf, since it is no longer needed, now
that we're putting libraries in /usr/lib
- System/Library/Makefiles is relocated to /usr/share/GNUstep/Makefiles
*Important note:* These new packages will *not* upgrade cleanly from the
previous versions that I created (nor from the stuff that's currently in
Debian). In particular, gnustep-make will conflict with the old
gnustep-base-common and gnustep-gui-common, due to the
System/Library/Makefiles relocation. You *must* remove
gnustep-base-common and gnustep-gui-common before installing the new
gnustep-make. Doing "dpkg --remove --force-depends gnustep-base-common
gnustep-gui-common" should be sufficient.
The packages are available at:
http://www.uhoreg.ca/programming/debian/gnustep/packages/
I'm not planning any other major changes, so any packages built against
these packages should be usable with the final versions of the packages
that I build.
(Matthias, I forgot to remove you from the uploaders field in some of
the packages as you had requested. I'll do that for the next version.)
My current plan is:
- Some time next week (or maybe the week after), I will release another
pre-release version of my packages. These will be release-candidate
packages, and should feature proper upgrading from the packages that
are currently in Debian. My hope is that these versions will be
pretty much ready for inclusion in Debian.
- Create an apt repository in alioth, so that we can have all the
GNUstep packages available from the same place. As maintainers build
their packages, they will be included in the alioth repository.
- Create the final versions of the packages.
- Post a final call on debian-policy, explaining the changes that we
have made to make to be FHS compliant, and see if there are any other
complaints.
- Since Debian is currently going through some library transitions, we
will need to wait before we start yet another one. So we will
coordinate with the release team, and wait for their OK to go ahead
with our transition.
