Thanks for the report.  This looks like a gnustep-back problem;
apparently the defoma script doesn't work reliably anymore.  Does
GNUMail work if you install gnustep-back0.16-cairo and do (as a normal
user):

$ defaults write NSGlobalDomain GSBackend libgnustep-cairo
