This comes from gnustep-make. All packages using it are built this
way, not only gnustep-base. Are you sure it is the reason for the
failure? Can you retry with gnustep-make with the attached patch
applied?
I'm not sure this is the right fix and what impact it would have.

Not very helpful unfortunately; in such cases config.log would be the
place to look.
