OK, I didn't know this.  But if you remove .svn files that are in the
upstream's tarball, it won't be the upstream's tarball anymore.  Or
perhaps they're stored in the pristine-tar branch and are included in
the tarball when it is recreated?

Well, if you are really that desparate for disk space, you can use the
normal workflow, fetch the tarball, work on the package, build, upload
and delete the tarball.  You would save even more space as you won't
store pristine-tar's delta files.
