I should add that running ldapsearch works fine though:

# ldapsearch -LLL -ZZ -H ldap://ldap.example.com -x -s one -b
"ou=People,dc=example,dc=com" "(uid=test)" uid
dn: uid=test,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com
uid: test
