Thanks - I will try that.  What about the lintian overrides - would it be fine to put out a pull request to add those?

The usual place for this would be the mailing list (pkg-go-maintainers at lists.alioth.debian.org), but it is OK.

The reason for that change is that recent versions of dh-golang install testdata automatically, so this is not needed anymore. I think the version requirement in debian/control is not high enough for this to be guaranteed, but if you use a recent version in your package, you should not have any issue.
