If I recall correctly, the issue with epoch's is not it's ugliness. We
had multiple threads on this list and it even ended up in policy
(5.6.12) to consult this list (bug #891216 [1]). I don't recall what the
exact problems were with epoch's (and couldn't spot it skimming that bug
report), just that there were technical issues with its use.
