Ok the problem is due to swig 1.3.1 which generates a gdal_wrap.c with
at least a missing function. I would patch to retain upstream gdal_wrap.c 
at build time to avoid possible breakages due to swig running.
The gdal.i probably needs revisions in order to work with a newer swig.

Find herein enclosed the broken gdal_wrap.c
