Can you please edit ~/.gpsdrive/gpsdriverc and change all variables that
contain a filename  or directory to an absolute path to see if this helps?
For example,
  waypointfile = ~/.gpsdrive/way.txt
  mapdir = ~/.gpsdrive/maps/
instead of 
  waypointfile = way.txt
