Package: mkgmap
Version: 0.0.0+svn1067-1
Severity: important
I have been testing the new version of mkgmap (svn1067) and found that -- among other things -- the demands on resouces has exploded.
Using the earlier version of mkgmap, svn630, currently in stable, and also
in Ubuntu, I could process denmark.osm directly without problems, and the
resulting gmapsupp.img file works in my Garmin Legend Cx device.
With svn1067, I found that I could no longer convert denmark.osm
(as downloaded from geofabrik.de). With help from the good folks on the
mkgmap-dev mailing list, I found that by using the splitter program (not
packaged in Debian) and giving the java VM 4G of RAM, mkgmap would work.
However, the resulting gmapsupp.img file does not work in my GPS; it causes
a crash when the device is turned off, giving a continuous beep tone. The
only way to stop that is to remove the batteries.
I have spent quite some time trying to get svn1067 (and newer) versions of
mkgmap to work, and I think normal users like me are better served using
the older version svn630.
Without the splitter, which is not packaged in Debian, the new version of
mkgmap is virtually useless.
Cheers,
Morten
