Bug#580170: mkgmap maintenance, help needed?

Hi,

The last update to the package was more than two years ago. Newer versions, at 
least compare to that in sid, of mkgmap have new features and bug fixes.
Is there any special reason why the package hasn't been updated?

I tried to locally build a newer version using the current packaging but it 
failed because of some errors in the code. I have yet to verify if they are 
true or whether something else is fishy.
At least the "precompiled" binaries by upstream do work.
