Thanks for the confirmation.
I can also reproduce the segfault when the package is removed.
I've added the dependency, and will upload a new qgis revision with the
fix after 2.8.5 passes the NEW queue. I'll also forward the fix upstream
for their packaging.

QGIS is very crash prone, as it doesn't handle errors gracefully. I'm
not happy with that either, but I also cannot provide a fix for it.
Every now and then someone raises the need for a crash handler in QGIS
on their development mailinglist, which generally gets the response that
it will be implemented when someone funds the work. If you'd like to
help improve QGIS upstream you can consider donating funds if that's
within your means. It's not within my means, so don't feel burdened if
it's not within yours either.
