It's a common practice among OSGeo projects unfortunately. Developers
need to make a living, and this is one way to do it while working on
Free Software.

Good luck finding a Free Software replacement for QGIS. The alternative
is the proprietary ArcGIS.
I'm not happy with the focus on funding for QGIS development, but that's
not something I can change. In the not too distant past, I've expressed
my dislike of the need for funding to get support for GRASS 7 in QGIS,
so I share much of your sentiment.

They are not begging, they don't have to. QGIS is a very successful
project and has plenty of funds. The QGIS development community consist
for a large part of independent developers that make a living from their
work on QGIS and other OSGeo projects. I'm happy for them that they can
make a living from their Free Software activities, I still have a dayjob
to pay the bills and work on Free Software in my spare time.
Please realise that if you refuse to help the QGIS project by
contributing improvements, they are even more forced to focus on funding
to get the work done. I don't object to contribute changes because I
want to share my improvements. We need to set the example that funding
is not required per se, there are also people who contribute as part of
the Free Software community without the need for funding.
Kind Regards,
Bas
