Ok, I figured out what's going on. I've reproduced this several times by
creating new projects using the steps I described. Closing the windows
by going to "Composer / Quit" and "Exit / Quit QGIS" the error is not
reproduced. But if I kill the composer window (in dwm using
|[Shift]+[Alt]+[c])|, then QGIS tries to restore the composer window on
startup, which must cause the problem I'm reporting.
