Sorry I started working on it just today.
You can find a partial work on my fork on gitlab [1].

* the issue regarding compatibility with matplotlib >= 2.0 (#854167 [2])
shall be fixed by upgrading to cartopy 0.16 (done)
* the issue regarding compatibility with proj5 (#889931 [3]) is still
under analysis. An issue against proj4 has been opened [4] but it is
still not clear the reason of the problem.
