Had to push a few more changes to improve the patch.

The piuparts CI failure is legit, the autopkgtest i386 test is new and known to be buggy (https://salsa.debian.org/salsa-ci-team/pipeline/-/issues/476), we may want to disable that for the time being or allow it to fail.
