Please don't. If you want to help, contribute to the maintenance of the merkaartor package within the GIS team or move it out of it if you don't like the team conventions, and start by cherry-picking the upstream commit to fix this issue.

I'm not going to keep issues open that nobody will act on.

So close to finding somebody willing and able to fix this issue in the package, yet it still being a miss is not surprising.

You should give QGIS a try, that's even more hardcore than JOSM and Merkaartor.
