Bug#345162: Grub refuses to boot any kernel different from the default debian one when using 'spashimage'

We have a co-located machine on which we have no remote console
available, and had a default Debian sarge installation. Then we tried
compiling a new vanilla 2.6.14.4 kernel, because we needed some drivers
for other devices, and then rebooted the machine with grub-reboot 1 (we
put the other kernel after the default one), and it never came back. We
had remote-reboot interface, so we did some more tests, trying different
configurations of 2.4.14.4, and then downloaded the debian kernel-source
package (2.6.8-2-k7), and tried using it - the result was the same.

Running out of smart ideas, we tried something stupid - I went through
the menu.lst, to check for some stupid mistake that we would've done,
and having found nothing, removed the splashimage line. After that
everything worked flawlessly.

The machine is normal debian sarge install, with an AMD Athlon
processor, here's the output from lspci, more information is available
