Status update:

 - kernel-package (as of 10.051) now generates postinsts that support relative
   paths in /etc/kernel-img.conf.

 - patch has been sent to d-i maintainers to make grub-installer use relative
   paths exclussively (#380351).

We'll have to handle the kernel-img.conf upgrade ourselves, though.  I think
something like this would be safe enough:

sed -i /etc/kernel-img.conf -e "s,\(.*\)  */sbin/update-grub$,\1 update-grub,g"
