0.97-3 made it complete sucsessfully, at least. But the fix uncovered
 another dash issue:

    tore at pride :) sudo /bin/dash /sbin/update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
    [: 788: 9920060109: out of range
    [: 788: 9920060109: out of range
    Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-1-k7
    Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-xen20060109
    Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

    tore at pride :)

If run under bash, the order changes, i.e. vmlinuz-2.6.15-xen20060109
is put as the first entry in menu.lst. But at least it generates a
 valid menu.lst using dash now.

This should probably be fixed, too, in order to guarantee consistent
behaviour. If you need it I can provide "dash -x" output, but I would
think this issue is fairly easy to reproduce so I haven't bothered.
