Package: grub
Version: 0.97-10
Severity: important

When I run update-grub using dash as the sh-like shell I get this output
(and menu.lst isn't updated):

manuk:/home/luca# update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file ... found:
/boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
Found kernel: /vmlinuz-2.6.17-rc5
Found kernel: /vmlinuz-2.6.16-2-686
Found kernel: /memtest86+.bin
shift: 973: can't shift that many

If I use bash it works just fine.
