a grub question

hi,
since i don´t know where to ask, a go ahead here now!

i would like to know, where i can make a settings, that grub is not 
automatically updating the /boot/grub/menu.lst ?

since i am using only self-complied kernels, i have a custom menu-list, 
and always when i want to update the grub package, i am afraid that the 
list is gonna be updated an that eventually i will not be able to boot 
my machine!
don´t know if this is true, but i really would like to disable the 
automatically menu.list updating by grub!

i hope that you guys have a easy answer for me, and please keep in mind 
that i am not a hacker, so i appreciate an "non-geek-language".
