How hard is it to do a GPT install with the standard installer? I haven't
tried, but I guess you could use the CD (with 'rescue' command) for your
first boot, and then install GRUB 2 from there. Did you find any other
problems?
If the procedure is so awkward that the average admin of a 2 TiB server
can't figure it out, then maybe we should reconsider..

Note that by "trying to fix it" I don't necessarily mean doing it all
yourself :-). Just filing a bug report is something that helps; I think
you should have done that before discarding GRUB 2 and trying to push
GPT into GRUB Legacy.
I'm sorry that upstream was unresponsive though. But we're all pretty
busy here, you know.. ;)

We can keep it open if you like (we have lots of wontfix bugs currently
anyway ;). If GRUB 2 doesn't work, then please report a bug; and if it
turns out it isn't something we can fix, then it would be more resonable
to discuss about GPT in GRUB Legacy.
