in grub-install there is a regular expression that strips the partition
from the dev supplied
/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 = 1
if you supply /dev/cciss/c0d0 howover it supplies the whole device, when
the code expects an empty string.
replace
-e 's%.*c[0-7]d[0-9]*p%%' \
with
-e 's%.*c[0-7]d[0-9]*p*%%' \
