Hi Krzysztof,
We're preparing to add background image support in GRUB 2.  If you're
still interested in GRUB backgrounds, I suggest you make a new package
with images for GRUB 2 instead of focusing on Legacy GRUB images.
GRUB 2 uses images in a new format (TGA), and allows 24-bit colors and
an arbitrary resolution (as much as your video card supports with VESA
modes).  For this reason the best is to gather new images rather than
just converting/reusing Legacy GRUB's, which have an inferior quality
in comparison with what we can support now.
