Okay, I just tried grub2 1.96+20080704-2, without the chainload option. It
installs without an error, and I've verified that it still can't find a PC
partition on a disk with a hybrid apple/pc partition map:

Purging grub2, grub-pc, and grub-common when not using the chainload option
does indeed remove the grub2 files from /boot/grub. :-)

   Thanks.
