In either case, whenever you want GRUB 2 to be loaded directly from MBR,
you can do so by issuing (as root) the following command:
.
upgrade-from-grub-legacy
That sounds like you should be able to just run it and reboot, wether you choose to chainload or not.
I have now commited a fix for it, that it calls update-grub if it doestn't exist before.
It's a bit unclear yes, as I first looked at it I wondered a bit about that, too.
But if you think about it then it does sound like it doestn't install to mbr if you choose to not chainload.
If anyone has an idea how to make it better, please tell us.
