pff font path on separate partition

What you mean with that you have disabled graphic mode?
Did you run update-grub then saw that the value is wrong and then did
commented the whole stuff out?
'if font' checks if it can be loaded and then enables gfxterm.
If it can't then you just have the old console terminal.

Well if you are sure it's not working for you, i.e. the font is bold and
thicker and not small as with the gfxterm and asci.pff loaded, then
please make a bugreport
