I noticed the following in my kernel messages:

        Jun  8 01:30:59 xerces kernel: [ 1014.799051] grub-setup[6449]: segfault at bfa7e000 ip 080526b6 sp bfa7afd0 error 4 in grub-setup[8048000+20000]
        Jun  8 01:31:43 xerces kernel: [ 1060.134915] grub-setup[7507]: segfault at bfead000 ip 080526b6 sp bfea9c00 error 4 in grub-setup[8048000+20000]

Maybe that can help pinpoint things.
