Hi, I tried the rebuilt grub-pc and still fails to boot.

I omitted one other detail that might provide a clue:

When the entry that boots by default fails, and I hit 'e' to edit the 
entry, I see only

set root=(hd0,1)

and not any other details from:

menuentry "Debian GNU/Linux, linux 2.6.30-rc6" {
         set root=(hd0,1)
         search --fs-uuid --set bfdeb6d6-0b77-4beb-a63d-bdc3e455b8ea
         linux   /vmlinuz-2.6.30-rc6 root=/dev/hda7 ro
         initrd  /initrd.img-2.6.30-rc6
}
