Yes, that'd be a good solution.  Unfortunately I don't have time to implement
it, but if you can send a patch, it'd be most appreciated.

Sorry, that's not possible.  Most of the time they're not even "versions"
but Bazaar snapshots.  And we don't track internal ABI in upstream because
it'd be unsustainable.
