Yes, I am quite sure that /boot is a separate partition as I build all
my systems this way.

And to be clear, prior to grub2 I had to manage the grub.conf manually,
which was fine, but then along came grub2 and and I had to make some
adjustments to work with the new grub.cfg file. This was working fine
until the most recent update where /boot is now being stripped to just /
creating the // issue. I do have /boot as sym-link to .  so linux
//vmlinux-2.6.32.4 should work.
