I've installed grub2, and re-installed grub-common and grub-pc, but the
problem persists as before.

eee:/home/thiemo# dpkg --get-selections | grep grub
grub deinstall
grub-common install
grub-pc install
grub2 install

eee:/home/thiemo# apt-show-versions | grep grub
grub-common/squeeze uptodate 1.98-1
grub-pc/squeeze uptodate 1.98-1
grub2/squeeze uptodate 1.98-1

It seems that update-grub is broken as well:

eee:/home/thiemo# update-grub
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).

Last time update-grub was working was on 2010-06-10 18:24:10 when I
apt-get removed linux-image-2.6.32-3-686.

I'm pretty certain I didn't touch grub config since then.

If you're interested I can provide you the dpkg logs since that date,
but I was mainly following squeeze updates, nothing fancy that I would
be aware of.

Cheers!

Thiemo
