Bug#575624: grub-pc: framebuffer vesafb broken with gfxpayload=keep

A fresh network installation of debian squeeze in a VirtualBox virtual machine.
/etc/default/grub modified with :
GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

The boot process is fine until gdm is starting. It brakes the console framebuffer 1-6.

This issue is new, introduced by 1.98-1 version of grub-pc. I didn't have this issue on previous installations running version 1.98~20100115-1.
