Bug#590231: improperly nested partition?

Michael Deegan bugs at deegan.id.au
Mon Oct 4 03:59:44 UTC 2010

Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.98+20100804-4
Severity: normal

I too get lots of spam from grub-probe whenever grub is updated:

   root at wibble:/home/michael# grub-probe -t drive /usr
grub-probe: warn: Discarding improperly nested partition (hd1,msdos1,msdos1).
grub-probe: warn: Discarding improperly nested partition (hd1,msdos1,msdos1).
grub-probe: warn: Discarding improperly nested partition (hd1,msdos1,msdos1).
   (hd1,msdos5)

Yet the partitioning -looks- normal:

   root at wibble:/home/michael# fdisk -l /dev/sdb

   Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
   255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
   Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
   Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
   I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
   Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
   /dev/sdb1 * 1 261 2096451 82 Linux swap / Solaris
   /dev/sdb2 262 783 4192965 83 Linux
   /dev/sdb3 784 4176 27254272+ 5 Extended
   /dev/sdb4 4177 121601 943216312+ 8e Linux LVM
   /dev/sdb5 784 2088 10482381 83 Linux
   /dev/sdb6 2089 3132 8385898+ 83 Linux
   /dev/sdb7 3133 3654 4192933+ 83 Linux
   /dev/sdb8 3655 4176 4192933+ 83 Linux

Following the advice of http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.boot-loaders.grub.devel/16803:

   root at wibble:/home/michael# file -s /dev/sdb1
/dev/sdb1: Linux/i386 swap file (new style), version 1 (4K pages), size 524111 pages, no label, UUID=cea20449-cab8-4ad1-ba4e-3a1f20ca59af
   root at wibble:/home/michael# dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=/tmp/b.mbr bs=512 count=1
   1+0 records in
   1+0 records out
   512 bytes (512 B) copied, 4.048e-05 s, 12.6 MB/s
   root at wibble:/home/michael# file /tmp/b.mbr
   /tmp/b.mbr: x86 boot sector; partition 1: ID=0x83, starthead 2, startsector 63, 50331519 sectors, extended partition table (last)\011, code offset 0x0

Perhaps grub-probe thinks that my /dev/sdb1 is an Extended partition, rather than swap?
