No, it comes from the init script (/etc/init.d/mdadm-raid).

I think, you should really try whether upgrading mdadm to version
3.1.4-1+8efb9d1 helps.
You may want to rebuild the initramfs manually (run `update-initramfs
-u' as root) to _ensure_ that you are actually using the new mdadm.
You may also want to update grub (run `update-grub' as root) to _ensure_
that you are actually using the new initramfs.

PS: Having a Live-CD/USB at hand is always useful if things break. Have
a look at http://live.debian.net/ . Ubuntu should also work.
