The old 05_debian_theme wasn't that robust for example when the splash
image was on a partition which wasn't directly readable by GRUB. That's
fixed now[1]. Either set $GRUB_BACKGROUND in /etc/default/grub or simply
copy your splash-image to /boot/grub.
