Bug#650113: core.img has grown too much?

Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.99-14
Severity: important
Upgrading grub-pc gives the following error:
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Your embedding area is unusually small. core.img won't fit in it..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
My disks are still partitioned with the old alignment to CHS so there
embedding area is small. But not unusually so:
mrvn at frosties:~% ls -l /boot/grub/core.img
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 31519 Nov 26 18:14 /boot/grub/core.img
root at frosties:~# sfdisk -d /dev/sda
# partition table of /dev/sda
unit: sectors
/dev/sda1 : start= 63, size=2930272002, Id=fd, bootable
/dev/sda2 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
/dev/sda3 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
/dev/sda4 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
root at frosties:~# sfdisk -d /dev/sdb
# partition table of /dev/sdb
unit: sectors
/dev/sdb1 : start= 63, size=2930272002, Id=fd, bootable
/dev/sdb2 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
/dev/sdb3 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
/dev/sdb4 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
root at frosties:~# sfdisk -d /dev/sdc
# partition table of /dev/sdc
unit: sectors
/dev/sdc1 : start= 63, size=2930272002, Id=83, bootable
/dev/sdc2 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
/dev/sdc3 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
/dev/sdc4 : start= 0, size= 0, Id= 0
The older grub-pc package had no problem fitting so I must assume
core.img has grown and now doesn't fit anymore. This will cause
problems for many older systems on upgrade.
